| duell Duell was founded over 30 years ago, in a small town near Amsterdam, by Jan van Dalen, the same guy who still builds all the Duell frames. Jan built his first frame at the age of 16 in his parents shed, where a lifelong passion began. In the early years Jan combined building frames with his professional cycling career. During the eighties Duell custom made steel frames were the pinnacle for most Dutch riders and Duell expanded and in the best years were building around 600 frames a year. Over the years other frame materials have gained popularity (aluminium and later carbon) and mass produced frames brought prices down, but Duell kept doing what they do best, continuing to specialise in custom steel frames and building a very strong reputation in the Benelux countries where people know a thing or two about cycling Jan says: "I have never regretted one second that I founded Duell. I only believe in the very best quality and I exclusively work with light weight, taylor made Dedacciai steel. Steel has never let anybody down. Nowadays with TIG welding I can build a frame as precise as possible can be. Welds are cleaner than ever. Pretty much every single frame is custom built. I do not care that a Duell weighs 300 grams more than a "modern" aluminium or carbon frame. It is the ride quality that matters, the longivity, and the reliability. The road feel on a Duell is incredible. I take great pride in the frames I build." |
